How to Pick a Checking Account for a Business
All businesses need a checking account. It is where you will deposit the money that you earn and it is what you will use to pay your bills. Choosing the right checking account is important if you want your business to be successful, that means that you have to know what to look for.
The main thing that you are going to want to look at when it comes to a business checking account is what the fees are. It is important to take note not only of what the fees are but how they are calculated. Some accounts will charge a by the transaction while others will charge a monthly fee for unlimited transactions. That means that you are going to have to figure out how many
transactions you expect to make each month before you even start looking at checking accounts. Once you know this you will be able to determine which account offers the best fees in your case.
The next thing that you are going to want to look at is what kind of features the account offers. This can be a challenge because there are so many different features on offer.
From free checks to highly detailed financial information that you can enter automatically into your accounting software. You are going to have to look at what features are on offer, which ones are useful for you and which ones aren't and how much they are going to cost. There is little value to paying for features that you aren't going to use so pay attention to this.
You are also going to want to pay attention to whether or not there is a minimum balance that you need to maintain. Most checking accounts will allow you to maintain any balance that you like but they will charge you higher fees if your balance drops below a certain level. Find out what that level is and make sure that you can maintain it. In fact it is a good idea to think about the balance you intend to maintain and then look at accounts from there. Often times you can save money if you know that you are going to maintain a high balance.
It is also probably going to be important to look at location when you are choosing a checking account for your business. In some businesses like retail you will likely be going to the bank everyday to make deposits, in some cases several times a day. You really don't want to have to drive to the other side of the city every day to have to do that. Therefore it is a good idea to choose a bank that is located near to where your business is located. Failing that you will want one that is located on your route to and from work, although this won't help if your employees need to make deposits for you.
